On the Enginuity forums, at least, we're going beyond legal issues and respecting peoples' work as we think they'd want. What could be better than legally binding them? If you don't want your tune shared, tell your customers explicitly. A person doing this would have no foot to stand on legally, and would likely be shunned by the entire community. One tuner mentioned he was afraid people (who never had his car tuned by said tuner) using custom tunes from different cars would show up complaining that tuner's map blew up his motor (did I say that clearly?). If someone wants to steal your tune so badly, they're going to do it anyway. Newsflash: we can read the realtime maps. How do you tell your customers to deal with a dead battery? "Make sure you have the AP in your car at all times because a reset ECU will make your tune poop." I hope you're knocking some of the cost off your tuning fees for this service. Who the hell are you to charge me hundreds of dollars to tune my car and 1) not give me the option to use that as a stepping stone when I have it tuned somewhere else after my next mod?

This is what has me slightly irritated and really surprises me about people in general. It came to my attention today that some tuners are putting the "meat" of their tunes in the realtime maps so people can't use ECUFlash to "steal" their work. Anyone who wants a custom tune is still going to go get it. There are already many base maps freely and legitimately available, covering most of the generic upgrade paths "the others'" base maps would. Basically, tuners not wanting people to steal their work.

The one that got me today and made me slap my forehead is IP, or security, or rights, or whatever you want to call it. (1) There are the two major things people have complained about. I'd like to address some of these things and hopefully a few tuners who are skeptical/concerned/afraid will understand things a bit better. Lots of tuners have expressed concerns over the open source tuning projects ( openecu, Enginuity) and while some of the complaints are reasonable and true, some of them are completely off base and silly.
